Grand Seiko Unveils a Collection of Seasons-Inspired Timepieces
It’s safe to say that the most exciting thing about COUTUREtime in Las Vegas was the four new season-themed watches from Grand Seiko. The four watches consist of two Spring Drive and two Hi Beat models. Let’s get our hands on them!
Although the collection was created specifically for the US market, everything about this stunning collection, from the design to the finish, reflects the Japanese way of celebrating the seasons and the ever-changing expression of the natural world.
Spring Before showing us around their delightful gardens, the Grand Seiko team noted that Japan actually has 24 “seasons” (sekki) due to its location and its culture’s strong connection to nature. But to reflect the special relationship between the US and Japan, these unique climate changes have been distilled down to four.
So, let’s start with spring. With its delicate pink dial, this watch evokes the graceful petals of cherry blossoms that bloom in the spring. Cherry blossoms are closely tied to Buddhist themes of death, mindfulness, and living in the present moment, and symbolize human existence.
Just as people travel thousands of miles to Washington, D.C. to see the gorgeous but fleeting cherry blossoms, the brilliance of the cherry blossom dial must be seen in the natural glory of the sun. Of course, it is powered by Grand Seiko's signature Spring Drive movement.
Summer 1967 Summer brings back memories of family road trips, old songs and lazy, hazy days. With this collection, Grand Seiko also pays homage to the brand's history, especially the iconic 62GS, a revolutionary automatic watch launched in 1967.
All Four Seasons watches feature a new case inspired by the iconic mirrored, multi-faceted, bezel-less case of the 62GS. The bezel-less design allows for a wider dial opening. And it features Grand Seiko's signature "Zarathustra" polishing.
The summer models feature a dark green dial, reminiscent of lush greenery. As always, Grand Seiko has incorporated Easter egg elements into the dial details. Look closely and you'll notice the horizontal brushed texture, reminiscent of a field. All of this is meant to evoke the energy and vitality of life.
Falling Sky The vivid blue dial of this watch evokes the colors of the autumn night sky. The delicate vertical lines make it seem as if moonlight is pouring down from the sky.
Autumn is also a time of harvest, and we all have to work harder to reap the bounty of nature.
Both the summer and autumn models of Grand Seiko are powered by the brand's traditional and powerful Hi-Beat 36000 mechanical movement. This dynamic and precise movement is a beauty in itself.
Winter Carnival The silvery-white dial of the final piece in the Four Seasons collection represents the crystalline surface of what the Japanese call "deep snow".
As we mentioned earlier, the Japanese further divide spring, summer, autumn and winter into three periods: early, mid and late. In literary works, each period has a "kiyu" to describe the subtle changes of each solar term. It's very poetic. This collection of poems is no different.
The Winter, like the Spring, is powered by the Grand Seiko Spring Drive movement. Both are housed in titanium cases, while the Summer and Fall are housed in steel.
For collectors who are perfectionists, Grand Seiko wants to offer a package. After all, who doesn’t want to be a man (or woman) for all seasons?
